BRUCE ALAN CUSTER

September 24, 1961 - November 20, 2020

 

Please join the Custer family on June 5, 2021 at 12:00pm at the Pavilion in Shane’s Park, Rockford, Ohio, as we remember the life of Bruce Alan Custer. Bruce’s wishes were that the be remembered in a celebration of his life, and that is what we are going to do. Bring your stories, memories, and if you can, photos of your adventures with Bruce. We will be serving some of Bruce’s favorite foods, playing some of his favorite music, and gathering in the hometown that he loved so much. It will be an afternoon full of laughter, tears, and fond memories. We look forward to seeing you there.

 

Bruce Alan Custer, 59, of Homosassa, Florida, formerly of Rockford, Ohio, went to be with our Lord on Friday, November 20, 2020.

 

He leaves behind his parents, Rolland and Carolyn (Marsee) Custer of Homosassa, Fl.; his brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Dawn, of Anywhere, USA; their three children, Christopher Kluge and wife Katy, Meghan Timko and husband Steve, and Kenneth Custer. Bruce also leaves behind his sister and brother-in-law, Karlene and Richard Anderson of St. Paris, Oh, and their three children, Jonathan Ellinger, Jessica and husband TJ Rouch, and Jayde Anderson. He also leaves behind many aunts, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and good friends.

 

Bruce was born September 24, 1961 in Celina, Ohio. He grew up in Rockford, Ohio, where he graduated from Parkway Local Schools in 1980. In 1985, he moved to Urbana and worked for Kroger of Urbana before pursuing a living with Honda of America in Anna. In 2003, he moved to Homosassa, Fl. to be close to his parents. Of all the things he loved to do, his favorites were playing Texas Hold ‘Em with his friends, traveling, and riding his motorcycle.

 

Bruce was cremated at the Hooper Funeral Home of Homosassa, Fl, and his remains will be held by his family until such a time a memorial can be arranged in Ohio. Bruce’s ashes will be spread among family members at several locations to include Woodlawn Cemetery in Ohio City, Riverside Cemetery in Rockford, Greasy Hollow Cemetery and Yoakum Cemeteries in Speedwell, Tn.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 20 E. 33rd St., New York, NY 10016.

 

 

 

OVERLEY

Dennis W. “Denny” Overley, age 71, of Celina, Ohio, passed away on Friday, November 20, 2020 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.  He was born on July 24, 1949 on Celina to the late Willard and Margaret Lauree (Muterbaugh) Overley. 

On July 8, 1994 he married Janie (Roll) Overley and she survives at the residence. 
 

Other survivors include two daughters, Katie M. (Mikel) Martinez, Lima, Ohio and Sarah L. Overley.
 

Denny is also preceded in death by his sister, Janet E. Overley.
 

Denny was a 1969 graduate of Mendon Union High School.  He proudly served his country in the United States in the Army, during the Vietnam War era.  He retired after working in tool and die department at both Huffy Bicycle Manufacturing Company in Celina and STAMCO in New Bremen.


He was a member of Celina American Legion Post 210, Celina VFW Post #5713, Fraternal Order of Eagles Shanes Aerie 1292, Rockford, Ohio and the Celina Moose. 
 

Most important to Denny was his family, he loved spending time with all of them and will be deeply missed by all. He also enjoyed playing cards and sitting on his front porch. 
 

Visitation hours will take place on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm at Cisco Funeral Home, Celina. 

Funeral service will immediately follow visiting hours at 4:00 pm with Rev. Diane Mendelson officiating.
 

Burial will follow at North Grove Cemetery in Celina.  
 

Attendees are required to follow social distancing and guidelines dictated by the Ohio Department of Health, due to the national concerns of COVID-19. Masks are required by attendees at the visitation and funeral.

SHAFER


 

Helen “Maxine” Shafer, age 81, of Celina, Ohio, passed away Friday, November 20, 2020 at 5:45 pm at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.  She was born July 16, 1939 in North Baltimore, Ohio to the late Charles and Emma (Brumbaugh) Benedict.  She married Alan “Al” L. Shafer on November 17, 1956 and he preceded her in death on March 16, 2016. 

 

Survivors include two daughters, Dawn (Kent) Hinton, Celina, and Amy (Ken) Phlipot, Celina; a son, Scott Shafer and his fiancé, Deb Diller, Celina; a sister, Shirley Hielman, North Baltimore; a brother, John (Joanne) Benedict, Findlay, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren.

 

Maxine is also preceded in death by a son, Jack Shafer; a brother, Bill Benedict; four sisters, Louise Smith, Mary Lloyd, Jane Hinton and Mabel Witter; a grandchild; and a great grandchild.

 

Maxine retired from Celina City Schools as a cafeteria manager after 22 years of loyal service.  She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Celina.

 

She was a devoted wife and mother, a fun loving grandma, who had many friends.  She will be missed by all.

 

Due to the National Health Concerns of Covid-19 Maxine’s funeral services will be private.

 

Contributions can be made to State of the Heart Hospice, Coldwater, Ohio and/or Bethany United Methodist Church, Celina, Ohio.

LEISTNER
John D. “Big John” Leistner, 66, of Rockford, Ohio passed away Friday, November 20, 2020, as a result of an accident.
 

He was born on April 18, 1954, in Decatur, Indiana to the late Paul Leistner and the late Barbara (White) Leistner.
 

He was a member of the Eagles #1292 in Rockford, Ohio and the American Legion.
 

John retired as a long haul truck driver for Moeller Trucking, logging over 6 million miles before retiring the first of 2020.
 

John loved his family, fishing, being outdoors, and enjoyed riding his Harley.
 

Survivors include a son, Shawn (Angela) Stroh of Readyville, Tennessee; three sisters, Paula Reeves of West Salem, Ohio, Nelda (Gale) Thomas of Celina, Ohio, and Rose (David) McComas  of Fort Wayne, Indiana; brother, Denny (Tina) Leistner  of Auburndale, Florida; and two grand-daughters, Lacy and Allie Stroh.
 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 27, 2020, at Bethel Brethren Church in Berne, Indiana with Pastor Joe Nass and Pastor Tim Broughton officiating. Interment will follow in the Kessler Cemetery in Chattanooga, Ohio.
 

Family and friends will be received from 9:00a.m. - up until the 11:00 a.m. service Friday, November 27, 2020, at Bethel Brethren Church in Berne, Indiana.
 

Preferred memorials can be made to the Wounded Warrior Foundation and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

KETCHAM
Margaret E. Ketcham, 69, of Celina, OH died 9:40 a.m. Friday November 20, 2020 at Shane Hill Nursing Home in Rockford, OH.

 

She was born May 20, 1951 in St. Marys, OH to Walter and Pearl (Coon) Burden.

 

She is survived by: her sona Scott Ketcham of Celina, OH, Lucas Ketcham of Celina, OH and  Brian (Julie) Ketcham of Portland, IN; three sisters: Jean (Gary) Baltzell of Rockford, OH, Kay Lauth of Rockford, OH; Burden of Rockford, OH and a brother Randy (Pat) Burden of Celina, OH as well as many nephews and nieces.

 

Preceded in death by: parents Walter and Pearl Burden; brother Davis Burden; brother John Burden; sister Sharon Coffman; sister Betty Dailey.

 

A certified nursing assistant, she had worked at Van Wert Co. Hospital , Colonial Nursing Home, Briarwood Manor and Otterbein. She also worked for Cooper Foods. In addition, she worked many activities held at the Grange Hall on the Mercer Co. Fairgrounds.

 

She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Celina, OH.

 

She enjoyed singing, jigsaw puzzles, camping and being in the great outdoors. She was great fun and liked to make others laugh. Above all, she loved her family and spending time with them.

 

Rites are scheduled to begin 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday November 24, 2020 at the Miller - Long & Folk Funeral Home 314 W. High Street in St. Marys, OH. The Rev. Jonathan Exman will officiate the services.

 

Visitation 3 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
