Richard W. "Dick" Hesse, age 85, of Mendon, passed away Monday, June 5, 2017 at Celina Manor.


He was born July 4, 1931 in Mendon, to Harry & Isalena (Davis) Hesse.


Dick married Marilyn Diegel on December 27, 1958, and she survives, 

along with their Daughter and Son: Glenna (Bruce) Schmidt of Celina 

and Galen (Tonya) Hesse of Mendon, five Grandchildren: Bryce & Brock 

Schmidt and Rachel, Taylor & Ryan Hesse, a Sister-in-law, Melanie Hesse 

of Celina and a Brother-in-law, Dillon (Beverly) Diegel of Cincinnati.


Preceding him in death were his Parents and a Brother, Max Hesse. 


Dick was known for his great sense of humor.  He was a 1949 

graduate of Mendon-Union High School, and served on the 

Mendon-Union Alumni Association Committee for several years. 


Serving with the Army from 1955-1957, he had been stationed in the 

United States. Dick was a farmer, and also worked in the welding dept. 

at Huffy Bicycles, where he retired after many years of service.


Dick had owned race horses, racing at local fairs and various tracks. 

His horse, "Quetzal" was an outstanding racehorse known in the 

region. He was a former member of the Mercer County Harness Horsemen's Assn.  Dick enjoyed attending fairs around the area. 


Becoming a Mason in 1958, Dick had been a member of Mendon 

Masonic Lodge #586, then transferred to Mercer Lodge #121 in 

St. Marys.  He was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of the 

Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of Dayton.


Dick enjoyed attending his Grandchildren's sporting events and 

activities.  He was a lifelong member of Hamilton-Bethel United 

Methodist Church, near Mendon.  


Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 8 at the 

Hamilton-Bethel Church. Pastors Rob Glenn and Randy Christian 

will officiate. Burial will take place at Hamilton-Bethel Cemetery.


Calling Hours are 2-8:00 PM Wednesday, June 7 at W.H. Dick & 

Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Mendon, and an hour prior to 

time of Services on Thursday, at the church.


Memorial Contributions may be made to the church.
