STEINER


Eugene F. “Gene” Steiner, age 93, of Celina, a former Rockford resident, passed away Friday, December 2, 2022, at The Gardens at Celina.   


He was born March 14, 1929, in Toledo, to Henry Fredrick and Cleo Ellen (Kline) Steiner.
 

Gene and Mary Evelyn Enyart were married on February 5, 1950.  The couple had celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary just months before Mary’s death June 19, 2020.
 

Surviving are sons: Dan (Shirley) Steiner and David Steiner, of Rockford, daughters: Gloria (Jack) Piercy of Goodyear, Arizona and Patti (Dave) Moon of Little Canada, Minnesota, 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a great-great granddaughter; also brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Ada Ruth Fast of Celina, Joshua & Peggy Howell of Dunkirk, Indiana, Mae Enyart of Van Wert, and Norma Jean Enyart of Celina.


He was preceded in death by a brother and his wife, John & Virginia Davis, a great-granddaughter, Erika Ché Ripley, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Dorothy & Robert Flore, Donald Enyart, Barbara Enyart, Norma Jean Howell, Mike Enyart, Jerry Enyart and John Fast. 

Gene was a graduate of Toledo Libbey High School, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.  He retired from International Harvester in Fort Wayne, where he worked as a foreman, and later retired from Celina Walmart.  Gene had attended the First United Brethren in Christ Church in Van Wert. 


A very active man, Gene was involved in many pursuits throughout his lifetime. He had been a lay minister, and at one time hosted a local radio program. Gene served for 8 years as Mayor of Rockford, and had also been a Council Member for the village for many years. In his 20's, Gene played softball, and other pastimes he enjoyed over the years were bowling, playing golf with the guys from International Harvester, and camping.    


In 1960, Gene was one of a group of local men that founded the ACME Baseball Program.  He had served as President of the organization, and in 2006, was inducted into the ACME Baseball Hall of Fame.  Gene was very proud of the success of the organization that he had helped get its start.  ACME Baseball is Ohio's longest-running high school summer baseball tournament program.
 

Graveside Services are being held at 1:00 P.M., Monday, December 12, at Mercer Memory Gardens, Celina, with Pastor Jody Harr officiating. 

Military Rites will be conducted by Celina VFW Post #5713 and American Legion Post #210.

HINES

 

James Eugene Hines, age 86, passed away Friday, December 2, 2022, at Elmwood Assisted Living of New Bremen.  Jim, formerly of Celina, had lived in Elida for many years prior to residing at Elmwood.

 

He was born June 15, 1936, in Celina, to the late Russell & Fern (Suhr) Hines.

 

Jim and Phyllis Piper were married on February 23, 1957, and she preceded him in death November 18, 2018.

 

Surviving are their 4 children: Debra (William) Hecht of Winter Haven, Florida, Vicki (Ron) Schmidt of Celina, James R. (Sarah) Hines of Sidney, and Jennifer (Rodney) Bryant of Burbank, California; 13 grandchildren, 

11 great grandchildren; his brother, Larry (Gracie) Hines of Bristol, Virginia, and sister, Gwen Bay of Dayton.

 

Jim was preceded in death by a grandson, Tyler Dellinger, brother & sister-in-law: Paul Marshall "Mart" and Diana Hines, and a brother, Joyce Hines. 

 

Jim was a graduate of Celina High School, and had been employed as the head mechanic at Sam Dixon Motor Sales in Celina.  He taught Auto Mechanics at the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) in Lima, and later worked at the Lima Flack Co. 

      

Jim was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elida.  He enjoyed playing golf and hanging out with the grandkids.  He spent time doing woodworking projects, having made many rocking horses for his grandchildren.  He loved taking photos and videos of the family, and making homemade ice cream.        

 

Calling Hours will be held at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Celina, Wednesday, December 7, 2022 from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m., with Funeral Services at 6:00.  Pastors Paul Scannell and William Hecht will officiate.

 

Memorial Contributions may be made towards Parkinson's Disease Research.
